Hardened SFTP & Secure File Transfer Infrastructure

Controlled, automated, and isolated data transfer pipelines.

Transmitting sensitive financial, healthcare, or client data takes more than default server settings. OS Assistance designs, deploys, and maintains Linux-based SFTP and encryption workflows with controls for access, isolation, automation, logging, and operational handoff.

We can restrict transfer accounts to approved directory trees, use SSH public keys for authentication, and automate PGP/GPG processing at the agreed points in a file-exchange workflow.

Access, key custody, data handling, and change approvals are agreed before implementation.

SECURITY ARCHITECTURE & IMPLEMENTATION

Layered controls for a dependable transfer workflow.

We design around the users, systems, partner requirements, key ownership, and file-handling rules in your environment.

01

Isolated SFTP accounts

Restrict scoped transfer users to approved directory trees with chroot and filesystem permissions. We test the account’s effective access and review required ownership and write paths.

CHROOT · PERMISSIONS · SFTP-ONLY
02

SSH key authentication

Configure public-key login for transfer accounts using Ed25519 where supported, or an organization-approved RSA key policy where compatibility or policy requires it. Password login can be disabled for the scoped accounts.

PUBLIC KEYS · ACCOUNT POLICY · ACCESS REVIEW
03

Automated PGP/GPG workflows

Automate agreed encryption, decryption, signing, validation, and routing steps. Define recipient keys, private-key custody, rotation, error handling, and retry behavior as part of the design.

ENCRYPTION · KEY CUSTODY · AUTOMATION
04

Logging & operational controls

Configure transfer logging and useful alerts. Fail2ban or other network controls can be added where compatible with the server, access pattern, and your security policy.

AUDIT LOGS · ALERTS · IP CONTROLS

FROM REQUIREMENTS TO HANDOFF

Build the workflow around the data path.

File transfers often cross teams and organizations. We document the handoffs, failure conditions, and operational owners so the process is supportable after rollout.

Discuss your file-exchange requirements
  1. 01

    Map senders and recipients

Identify partner systems, users, destinations, transfer frequency, and file types.

  2. 02

    Define access and key ownership

Agree SSH login policy, directory boundaries, PGP/GPG recipients, and private-key custody.

  3. 03

    Implement and test

Configure the approved path, verify permissions and encryption steps, and exercise failure handling.

  4. 04

    Document operations

Hand off account procedures, rotation expectations, log locations, and recovery steps.

ONGOING LINUX CARE

Keep transfer operations maintainable.

Approved SFTP configuration, account provisioning, and transfer automation can be queued as in-scope Linux Care work. The retainer covers approved Linux servers and in-scope tasks during weekday Office Hours, handled one active task at a time.

Review SLA & support scope
Does SFTP encrypt files while they are stored?
SFTP encrypts the connection while files are transferred; it does not automatically encrypt stored files. A PGP/GPG workflow or storage-level encryption can protect files at rest when included in the approved design.
Can you automate both incoming and outgoing PGP/GPG workflows?
Yes. We map where encryption, decryption, signing, and validation belong based on senders, recipients, and key ownership. The workflow uses recipient public keys for encryption and client-approved private-key custody for decryption.
Can you disable password login and isolate partner accounts?
We can configure key-based SSH authentication and limit SFTP-only accounts to approved paths. The specific authentication policy, chroot layout, permissions, and any impact to other server users are reviewed before changes are applied.
Does an SFTP implementation certify regulatory compliance?
No. Technical controls can support your organization’s security and compliance program, but an SFTP configuration alone does not certify compliance. Your organization remains responsible for its policies, risk assessment, and regulatory obligations.
Are SFTP and automation changes included in the monthly plan?
Approved SFTP configuration and related automation may be included as in-scope Linux Care tasks. Linux Care work is handled during Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Central service hours, one active task at a time. Scope is confirmed before work begins; see Linux Care and the SLA for details.
